Fried calamari

Gluten-free recipes

Fried calamari, either breaded or tempura-style, are perfect for dipping in a wide range of sauces, with each sauce creating an entire new dish and taste experience.

We recommend these three dipping sauces that are ready to use: Puttanesca Sauce with its spicy finish, our aromatic and smooth Garlic Aioli with Saffron & Orange, and our tangy Garlic Aioli with Basil & Lemon. Each sauce combines perfectly with fried calamari, as well as other fried foods like fish cakes, fish sticks, nuggets, or chicken fingers.

Ingredients

  • ½ lb. cleaned calamari rings and tentacles

For Tempura Method:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • ½ cup flour
  • 2/3 cup ice cold water
  • Oil for frying

For Breaded Method:

  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 tsp. Baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying

Dipping Sauces:

Preparation

Method 1: Tempura

  1. Heat oil, preferably olive oil, in a fryer or in a medium sauce pan.
  2. For the batter, in a bowl, mix the egg yolk and ice cold water, add the flour and mix lightly. There should still be lumps in the batter. (the batter should be made right before frying when the calamari is ready and the oil is hot).
  3. Dry the calamari with paper towel before dipping it in the tempura batter.
  4. Shake off excess batter and fry in oil until golden.
  5. Serve warm with three dipping sauces.

Method 2: Breaded

  1. Heat oil, preferably olive oil, in a fryer or in a medium sauce pan.
  2. Beat egg and baking powder together in a bowl.
  3. Toss calamari with flour.
  4. Dip calamari in egg mixture.
  5. Shake off excess batter, and fry in oil until golden.
  6. Serve warm with three dipping sauces.
